How to Become an Insurance Underwriter

How to Become an Insurance UnderwriterHow to Become an Insurance UnderwriterAmong the career paths in insurance, insurance underwriters analyze insurance applications to determine whether they should be accepted or rejected. Insurance underwriters may be employed by insurance companies or by independent insurance brokerage firms. While they normally fill a back-office role in support of insurance sales agents, they sometimes accompany the agents on sales calls to clients or prospective clients. Job Openings ?? Available insurance underwriting positions can be found on various job websites such as Glassdoor, Indeed, and CareerBuilder. In addition, insurance companies may post job openings directly on their company website. Education To become an insurance underwriter, you must have a bachelors degree. Any coursework in business, finance or accounting can be helpful, but is not required. A high degree of computer literacy is important, as the position involves performing data a nalysis, which is commonly computerized. A Master of Business Administration degree can be a useful credential, depending on the firm. Certification ? Entry-level jobs usually require no special training or certification. However, obtaining some formal certification often is important to advance in the field. The Insurance Institute of America (IIA) and the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (AICPCU) are the leaders in insurance underwriting training and certification. The most respected credential that they offer is Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). It requires passing eight out of 11 courses and having at least three years of relevant insurance industry experience. The CPCU is awarded either in commercial or in personal insurance. Job Responsibilities Depending on the type of insurance being requested, insurance underwriters may conduct independent investigations of applicants, such as credit or background checks. Also, if pro perty insurance is sought, insurance underwriters may need to enlist the help of professional appraisers.? Actuaries assess risk at a macro level, determining the proper premiums and policy terms for broad categories of individuals and properties. Insurance underwriters work at a micro level, analyzing specific applications for insurance, and tischsetting the specific policy terms and conditions for each that they accept, within guidelines set by the insurance carriers. Among these terms and conditions is the premium to be paid by the insured. Typical Schedule The majority of insurance underwriters work close to a standard 40-hour week, normally from fixed office locations. However, some insurance underwriting jobs require varying degrees of travel, such as those related to the insuring of workplaces, construction sites, and ships. In these cases, the insurance underwriter usually must inspect the venue to assess the risk. Advantages and Disadvantages Insurance underwriting will appeal to analytical people. It also can lead to opportunities in general management within the insurance industry. However, in some specialties, such as writing various lines of personal insurance, where you process data in a fixed office location, the job can become mechanical and repetitive. Salary Range ?? The median annual compensation for an insurance underwriter is $54,803 according to January 2019 data, with the top 10 percent earning $85,000.

One 47-year-old Michigan employee welches just fired for bringing laxative-laced brownies that were intended for a departing coworkers goodbye party.Revenge was almost served through laxative-filled browniesWhen we dont like our coworkers, we may choose the more passive-aggressive option of talking behind their back or even eating their lunch. But this unnamed employee went a more creative route and decided to serve her revenge on a platter of bowel-clearing desserts. Employees interviewed by police said there was brewing tension between the departing colleague and the brownie baker.Did anyone actually eat these digestive disasters? Thankfully not. The police were tipped off to the womans devious plot by her company,MMI Engineered Solutions before she cou ld get away with it. How to Find Concert Tour Sponsorship

How to Find Concert Tour SponsorshipHow to Find Concert Tour SponsorshipTouring is expensive business, so musicians and labels frequently turn to tour sponsors and concert sponsorship opportunities to help them foot the bill. Competition is, of course, intense, and sponsors will, of course, want something in return for their cash. Researching Concert Tour Sponsorship Assess Your Geographical ReachIf youre planning a strictly local event, approach a local business to make your pitch. If youre looking for help on a domestic tour, you need a sponsor who can benefit from being seen around the country - in that case, think regional or national business. The amount of money you need also makes a difference. Certainly asking the local bakery to sponsor your gig to the tune of $2 million isnt likely to get you more than a babkaCreate a PlanKnow exactly how much money you need and why - and the answer is not, as much as possible. Formulate a budget for your concert or tour, figure out exac tly how much money you need and determine what you need it for. Not only is this process instructive, it will enable you to talk knowledgeably about the financials of your project when convincing sponsors to take a chance on your event. Know What Youre OfferingKeep in mind that this exchange isnt all about someone giving you money. You are offering a branding opportunity, so spend some time analyzing the reasons why profil sponsors should get on board with you. What kind of advertising and branding can you offer? Signage on the stage? The companys name all of the show promotional materials (Presented by...)? Handing out coupons or samples to the audiences? Come ready to discuss these details and be prepared to make your case.Be ready to negotiate and know your limitations. If the company wants to pick the opening act, make a presentation on stage or use your music in their advertising in exchange for their sponsorship, for instance, are you willing to accept those terms? Know what i s on and off the table before you make you make your pitch. Contact the Right PersonBefore you approach your potential sponsors, do your homework and determine the right point of contact. Depending on the business, you might find this task is easier said than done. Large companies, particularly alcoholic beverage businesses, for examples, are approached frequently, so you will likely find specific instructions for making a sponsorship bid on their website. Follow their procedures, even if you feel like their rules restrict the way you envision making your pitch. These rules are in place to help the company effectively deal with requests, and if you dont stick to them, your request will likely be destined for rejection. With smaller companies, departure with the PR and marketing department. For very small, local businesses without designated departments, start with the owner or manager. Come Prepared to SellWhile sponsorship might be old hat to some large companies, the local mom and pop shop youre eying as a partner for your local gig might never have considered the possibility. You might have to sell the entire idea to them - what youre seeking, what youre offering, and why it would be good for you both. Be prepared to take the lead and convince them that sponsorship is a winning ideashow them the road map to making it happen. Approaching Tour Sponsorship Ask the ExpertsVenues can be a great source of information- in fact, the booker at the venue might have a standing relationship with sponsors, such as an alcoholic beverage company they can contact on your behalf to sponsor an open bar for your gig in exchange for some branding. Agents and promoters are also excellent info sources.Check WebsitesLook at arena tours of major artists. There is almost always a big league sponsor on board. You might not land that same sponsor for your small club tour, but the companies you see attached to larger tours provide clues for your to follow. Check out their websites - youll almost certainly find information about applying for sponsorship, including the requirements. You may find that the company is willing to sponsor smaller scale shows. Companies accustomed to music sponsorship sometimes run contests that award smaller acts with big money sponsorship. Take some time to get to know the usual suspects and keep them on your radar. Consider the SourceSponsorship almost always comes at some kind of cost, but is the price tag worth it? Knowing your audience is critical to making your music career work, and sponsorship is an excellent case in point. What will your fans allow? A beer sponsorship might turn off some fans of your Christian rock band while your megastore sponsorship might send the indie kids running for the hills. Think carefully about companies with clear political and religious affiliations, and remember that alcohol and tobacco can be controversial to some groups. Youre linking your name to this sponsor, so make koranvers that youre b uilding a relationship that you and your fans are comfortable with. Get Savvy With FinancesMoney is ALWAYS an issue in the music industry. Learn more about how you can manage your cash with info about funding sources, preparing funding applications and business plans, and how to spend the money once you do get it. Hold Up Your End of the Sponsorship Bargain Being professional will ensure that the deal goes smoothly and will open the door to future opportunities by Responding to all requests for information from your sponsor promptly.Staying on top of the planning process (if you have a manager, this is a job for him). Make sure the plan is progressing and stay connected with your sponsor so all of their materials are on track for on-time delivery.Ensuring that all advertising, marketing and signage adheres to the sponsorship deal.

Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination

Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination Impact Through Knowledge Dissemination and Cooperation in the CommunityBy Alaina G. LevineIn the area around the city of Rourkela (INDIA), located in the northeast Indian State of Odisha, the school drop-out rate is considerably high, notes Naushita Sharma, a junior in mechanical engineering at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) and a past member-at-large of the universitys ASME section. Some boys tend to drop out of school in the10th grade due to economic reasons, and girls may leave as early as the 5th grade. Sharma and her fellow ASME members realized that this community problem had significant national economic and workforce impacts, and seized the opportunity to address this dilemma.Their elegant solution welches Project SAHAYOG (STEM Augmentation and Holistic Advancement for YOuth Gearing up for the future), (also from the Hindi word meaning cooperation), an outreach program and engineering conference which targeted young boys and girls was designed to educate their neighborhoods about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and careers. The team specifically reached out to people in the community who are underrepresented minorities in STEM, including members of the tribal community and those who are below the poverty line. Our aim was to attract young students into engineering research, and to provide information to help them understand what it is, says Udayan Singh, also a junior in ME.Funded in part by an ASME Diversity Action Grant, the year-long program was a complete success. Project SAHAYOG kicked off in the fall of 2015, ASME members visited schools and conducted surveys to identify the level of awareness the kids had of different topics and career paths in engineering, as well as parental pressures to pursue certain professional paths. One important piece of data gleaned from the survey was that 75% o f the girls were in the position to be the first members of their family to go to college, says Singh. Based on the information they collected, the team then implemented an Activity Week in January 2016, in which the group of engineering students returned to the selected schools and presented a set of demonstrations and active-engagement activities for the children to learn how to solve engineering-related problems in team settings.A view of the audienceThe last phase of Project SAHAYOG (wherein the DAG funding from ASME was utilized) consisted of integrating a program into the schools and introducing a conference held at the university. Over a three day weekend (March 2016), the section hosted the National Workshop on Engineering for the Future. At this event, 166 students (including 84 girls), primarily 12-19 years old from 13 regional schools and two diploma colleges (similar to community colleges in the US) attended presentations and demonstrations by engineering professors and ASME section members, and toured three major departmental laboratories that house research in automation, cryogenics and internal combustion engine dynamics.Almost, fifty-percent (50%) of the talks were on mechanical engineering research topics, while the remaining spanned the scholarship of STEM, including discussions on breakthroughs in electrical, civil, and energy engineering. The conference was inaugurated by Professor B.B. Bhattacharya, former Director of the Indian School of Mines, who spoke about the Indian expedition to Antarctica. The Director of NIT Rourkela, Professor S.K. Sarangi, discussed his research on cryogenics, while Professor Suman Chakraborty, an ASME Fellow, talked about his ground-breaking research in microfluidics and microfabrication. Another keynote speaker Dr. B.P. Singh, Chief Scientist at a leading national laboratory in India, explained his recent work on grapheme. NIT Rourkelas faculty members also spoke about breakthroughs in wireless communications, robotics, structural engineering and automotive engineering. Special sessions were devoted to being successful in college and engineering careers, and included presentations by NIT Rourkela students, notes Sharma, who served as the convener for the conference. In the valedictory speech, Sarangi encouraged the kids to focus on the societal and industrial aspects of engineering to improve peoples lives.A view of the dias during the valedictory session. Prof. Suman Chakraborty, F-ASME, Chief Guest, Prof. S.K. Sarangi, Director, NIT Rourkela and Prof. K.C. Pati, Dean (S.W.), NIT Rourkela can be seen sitting as Naushita Sharma thanks the guests and student delegates for the workshopAt the conclusion of the meeting, another survey was taken, in which the kids were asked if they would prefer to study STEM for a career in engineering. A resounding 95.2% of respondents answered in the affirmative. There were many lessons for the ME students who organized the affair. As the convener, Sharma g ained prized expertise in project planning and execution, time management, and communications. Being able to head this workshop, I learned I could lead, she says. And this gives me an edge in my career. Similarly, Singh shares how the meeting involved social engineering, in which he and his colleagues truly sharpened their abilities to lead they had to ensure the kids paid attention, knew where to go next, and were gaining value from the experience. I have a newfound respect for professors leading the classroom, he says with a laugh. The team members were also able to hone their crisis management skills. While making the last minute review of the facilities, we realized that the auditorium did not have microphones or a projector, says Sharma. But there wasnt staff to assist, because the section had purposely set the event on a holiday weekend so the room space would be available. The team sprang into action and everyone rallied to find and procure the equipment. And when we started at 9am, no one knew anything had been wrong, says Singh. Section leaders also learned to negotiate, when they needed to quickly arrange for a tea break for the attendees and had to convince the skeleton crew on campus to help them with this enterprise.Looking back on the exciting year of outreach, the team is both proud of their accomplishments and introspective of their impact. Engineering and research is something we are meant to do, but in a developing country like ours, it is a major responsibility to reach out to kids who have less access to information about how to pursue engineering careers, says Singh, who has published letters to the editor about the state of educational development in India and plans to go to graduate school in ME. There is a responsibility and an aspirational aspect of it and that makes it the most important thing.Sharma, who presented on their project at WE India, the inaugural Society of Women Engineers conference in the nation and also aims to pursue a PhD in ME, notes that the influence that this project has on her community is long-lasting and empowering for everyone involved. After the event, we met with a class of students who had attended, and both the kids and later even a parent asked when we were going to organize this again, says Sharma. This means everything to her because it clarified Project SAHAYOGs goals and results Knowledge makes a difference. If you have any marketing experience, such as being part of a club on campus, volunteering or a previous internship, include the role and what you accomplished. Rather than just giving a list of tasks, including results. For example, instead of writing promoted veranstaltung you would write, Created marketing plan for ca mpus event that resulted in record-breaking attendance. 4 Powerful Strategies for Relaunching Your Career in 2018

4 Powerful Strategies for Relaunching Your Career in 20184 Powerful Strategies for Relaunching Your Career in 2018 As 2018 approaches, many professionals desire a new job, promotion or career change . When you start to feel like your career is becoming stale or stagnant, its time to push the reset button and upgrade yourself the same way you upgrade the mobile apps on your smartphone. Every 12 months, when I welches an Information Technology professional, I reassessed my career in order to function and execute better in the workplace. When I finally relaunched my career from the federal government into the private sector, I created a career roadmap ofboth short- and long-term goals that would help me brand, market and sell myself, as well as make me happy.Below, Ive identified five powerful strategies that helped me - follow them yourself, and you can relaunch a career full of passion and purpose in 2018.Personal goals seem to always get lost in the midst of career planning , but they really set the tone for what type of life you want for yourself. A great way to document your personal goals is in a journal. Before I relaunched my career, I remember writing down in my journal that I wanted to spend mora time with family and make mora time for photography and writing.Once your personal goals have been established, identify small actions that will help you obtain those goals. As you start toaccomplish them, youll feel better about yourself and your life, making it much easier to feel good about setting goals for your career. Its so important to be proactive in your career goal-setting - its not your managers responsibility, but your responsibility. You control your career brand, so its worth personally documenting your goals in an Individual Development Plan (IDP) at the start of 2018, even if your employer doesnt require it. When I relaunched my information technology career into the private sector, I created new career goals that were going to make me a happier professional. For instance, I set new training goals, established work-life balance boundaries and decided I only wanted to commute 25 miles from home to work. And within nine months of leaving my federal government job, I earned my ScrumMaster certification. This certification helped me earn over $40,000 more than my former salary.Your career brand represents you, not only as a professional but as an individual. A career brand facelift helps to keep your career expertise fresh, creative and innovative. One of the best ways to refresh your career brand is to establish yourself as asubject matter expert. If you write a book, make a personal website or create an industry-related blog, you can showcase your expertise to your colleagues and leadership. Books, blogs and websites also open doors for speaking engagements and writing opportunities with more popular websites - and maybe even job opportunities. As the new year approaches, think about documenting all the pr ojects, professional training and volunteer work you have completed in 2017 in your resume. Making sure your resume is current is critical, as the start of the year is a prime time for recruiters to look for new talent. When I relaunched my federal government career into the private sector, I spent a full day revamping my resume, LinkedIn profile, headshot and professional summary. Then, I joined professional groups and invited industry professionals to be a part of my online network. Its important to connect with recruiters and senior executives at the companies where your desire to work in 2018 - feel free to send them a direct message and introduce yourself. Most of my direct messages landed me interviews at companies like Deloitte, Microsoft, Amazon and Booz Allen Hamilton.Dont forget to have fun relaunching your career in 2018. Remember You own your career and personal brand, and you have the power to effect the change that you desire.
